I want to open a business where I would sell all-natural products for health, beauty, household, and pain management, as well as other things related to herbalism, aromatherapy and other natural health products. I have tested my recipes myself, and family has tested them for me, but I would like to get a table at a health and wellness fair to give surveys about my future business and to give out free samples with my name and number for people to try. I’m trying to find out about any legal preparations I need to make. I don’t have a registered business name or anything, I just want to do some research to prepare myself a bit more before I continue on with the process of opening a small business. Any advice would be really appreciated.

You shouldn’t need to worry about any legalities if you are not selling anything. However if you are selling these things you will need a retail license or a business license. I am a Naturopathic Doctor and I sell herbal meds to people. All I have is my business license. However I would be interested in what products you have to offer. If you could send me some samples I would love to try them out. As I end up ordering a lot of my stuff because I don’t have the time to make everything myself dealing with my clientele. I have to much to do because I offer medical information as well as consultations to people in need of my services. You also may want to try nolo law they are a self help legal site. I’m really starting to love plants and have such a great facination and admiration for them. What interests me is their productive role in our enviroment ( not interested in enviromental issues) such as providing us with food, medicines and their natural healing properties. I have read a little on ethnobotany and find it facinating but don’t wish to specialize in it. Also their uses in the skin care/beauty/aromatherapy industry.

I also would be interested in learning anything about their aesthetic beauty ie why they are different colours, why they produce fragances. Their secret little world like their senstivity to stimuli and of course the usual stuff like breading and gentetics.

Would any of these topics be covered in a botany degree? What actually is covered? Given my above interests, would botany be a ideal path for me? A friend suggested I study horticulture but I have no interest in planting and landscaping.

Sounds like you should aim at horticultural research as a field to work in … study horticultural science but major in plant breeding and genetics. Given the interests you list, a regular botany degree would not suit you.

I’m 21 years of age currently putting together a business plan and struggling to think of a name for my spa/salon.

The services offered will include; massage (aromatherapy, swedish & indian head); reflexology; electrical facials; tans; luxury mani & pedicures; nail extensions; make-up application; eyebrow & lash treatments…to name just a few!

I would like the name to suggest relaxation and pampering rather than focusing on the superficial beauty as i believe it may be more alluring however that is just one opinion.

Should I go to a Beauty School or Cosmetology School? Are those the same thing? Are these the things Esthetics’s do?

The laws are different in different states, but a basic cosmetology license should cover you except for the massages. You will have to go to massage therapy school for that.
